The inspiration for 3 Spice Dance is Bearnstow, a historic dance center home to world renowned artists and dedicated to nurturing the creativity of dancers through its inclusive pedagogy and 65 acres of protected wilderness. It is a 72-year-old organization that continues to be run by the same leadership since 1946. Ruth Grauert was an assistant, stage manager and lighting designer for some of the most prominent choreographers in the 40’s and beyond, namely Alwin Nikolais and Murray Louis. She and her partner founded Bearnstow with the mission to bring together people of all races, religions and genders, making Bearnstow deeply dedicated to dance history and social justice. As Ruth approaches 99, 3 Spice Dance is recognizing how much knowledge and history this place holds, as it has shaped dancers for the last 70 years, including world-renowned choreographer Bebe Miller.

Not only does this historic artist sanctuary manifest in the quality and method of 3 Spice Dance’s choreographic practices, but also in the aesthetic of our performances, which transform the lobby to feature sculptures, paintings, audio, and dance videos that together create a captivating installation reimagining the outdoor/defining characteristics of Bearnstow on Parker Pond.
